Recently, I joined the IECG Thematic Tournament, covering the Ruy Lopez Classical (Cordell's) Defence : 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Bc5.

Here you find one of the games from this Tournament. In the middlegame my opponent made some wrong choices, so I could finish the game before move 30.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5 4. O-O Nd4 5. Nxd4 Bxd4 6. c3 Bb6 7. d4 Qe7 8. Na3 c6 9. Ba4 exd4 10. cxd4 Qb4

10... Qxe4 ?? (taking the pawn will cause Black grave problems) 11. Re1 Qxe1+ 12. Qxe1+ Ne7 13. Nc4

11. Be3 Nf6 12. e5 Nd5 13. Bb3 d6?

Better is 13... O-O!?

14. Nc2 Qb5 15. exd6

The passed pawn on d6 will quickly become a dangerous weapon

15... Be6 16. Bg5 h6 17. Bxd5 Qxd5 18. Be7 Bd8 19. Ne3 Qb5 20. d5 cxd5 21. Qd4 f6 22. Rfe1 Bb6?

In my opinion black must play 22. ... Bxe7 23. dxe7 Qd7 (Not 23. ... Kxe7?? 24. Nxd5+!) 24. Rac1 Kf7 25. f4 (and black can still fight)

23. Qf4 Ba5??

Better is 23... Kf7 24. Ng4 Qxb2

24. b4 Bxb4 25. Rab1 a5

25... d4 (is not better) 26. Rxb4 Qxb4 27. d7+ Kxe7 28. Nd5+ Kf7 29. Nxb4 Bxd7 30. Qd6

26. Nf5 Bxf5 27. Bxf6+ Kf8

27... Kd7 (is the only move) 28. Qxf5+ Kc6 29. Bxg7 Rhd8

28. Qxf5!

puts the final touch

28... gxf6 29. Qxf6+

29. Qxf6+ Kg8 30. Qg6+ Kf8 31. Rb3 Bc3 32. Rxc3 Qd3 33. Rxd3 Rh7 34. Rf3+ Rf7 35. Rxf7#
